SITElines 2016 much wider than a line

SITElines 2016 much wider than a line opens at SITE Santa Fe Saturday, July 16th. The title refers to going outside traditional borders, whether geographical or otherwise. This photo is a detail from Jeffrey Gibson’s installation, Like a Hammer, a traditional robe that’s been reconceptualized with modern materials along with a video of Gibson and his drum. This photo is of the metal cones that hang from the robe and jingle. They were traditionally made by hand from tobacco can lids but are now mass produced in Taiwan.

Gibson, who was born in Colorado Springs now calls Hudson, New York home. In keeping with the exhibition’s theme, the sign on the wall tells us that the traditional robe made with up-to-date mixed media, goes way beyond that tradition.

SITElines 2016 much wider than a line runs through January 8, 2017.
