On a springlike day earlier this week we took a ride to the end of Santa Fe’s Old Las Vegas Highway. Just before the road ends in Canoñcito, we discovered this picturesque old church and the old cemetery adjacent to it. We had to stop and get a few photos.

A bit of research turned up some info.  The adobe Nuestra Senora de Luz, built between 1880 and 1891, sits along part of the old Santa Fe Trail. It was a mission church built to accommodate people who couldn’t make it to the local parish. Today the priest from St. Anthony’s parish in Pecos celebrates mass every third Saturday.

We loved discovering Nuestra Senora de Luz Church in Cañoncito, New Mexico and would love to see the inside some day. Have you been there?

I discovered it when I was a baby in 1941, as the house next to the church belonged to my grandfather & his brother. The first grave marker is my great grand father & my great grand mother next to his. Also the land I Glorieta “Glorieta Battle Field” is also part of the Garcia’s. We are Indians from Pecos that later move in with the Jemez Pueblo. Of Spanish and native American decents.

I think we are cousins. My Grandmother was Vicenta Garcia who was the daughter of Blas Garcia, sister of Esteban and Roque Garcia from Canoncito.
