Meet the travel bloggers: Stay Adventurous

This week Meet the Travel Bloggers interviews Craig Zabransky of Stay Adventurous.

When, why and how did you start your travel blog?
I started Stay Adventurous in January of 2010. After transitioning from a global management consultant to a freelance writer in 2009, I learned I needed more places to publish my content. So, I started the site to help continue my freelance career and have a travel blog as my “clips” and basically my resume of travel. It certainly progressed from there.

How did you get the name Stay Adventurous and what does the name mean to you?
By 2010, Stay Adventurous was a no-brainer for my site, but its evolution begins years earlier. After an amazing two-week trip through Greece and sailing the Ionian Islands in 2004, I returned to corporate life determined to change. I decided I needed to see more of the world and started to plan my travel sabbatical, my RTW adventure. To remind myself I started signing my corporate emails with the signature “stay adventurous, Craig” (instead of cheers or regards). The name resonated with so many people and I quickly became the adventurous guy in the office. There was no turning back.  So today it reminds me about the power in reminding yourself to follow your dreams… for me that dream is to stay adventurous in life.

What is the thing that keeps you the most jazzed about blogging?
When a reader has an ah-ha moment, a mindset change. It’s in my tagline, “a mindset for travel and mindset for life.” I truly want my readers to connect with the place through my eyes and learn how to see it a little differently than their preconceived notions.  So, when someone reads a story and writes a comment or sends a tweet or Facebook line about how they changed or appreciate my view, well that gets me “jazzed up.”

And I’ll admit, I also love when someone appreciates my photography, I’ve been really focusing on it this past year, so that too, makes me smile.

What excites you about travel?
What doesn’t? Can I say EVERYTHING? To learn, to eat, to enjoy, to explore, to experience, yes everything. Heck, I like to consider my adventures a romance with the world and I am deeply in love. Every place has its charm and I am always thankful for the chance to discover it.

What kind of traveler are you? Luxury, bargain, backpacking etc?
I’m a mix. I can backpack and stay in hostels and also appreciate and write about luxury.  I even like to focus on finding value at destinations, a bit different from bargain travel, but I definitely mix it up on the road and in my blog story. You don’t need to limit yourself to one type when you stay adventurous.

On the road, do you seek out some experiences more than others?
If there is one experience I seek out, or always appreciate, it is the sunset. I have a Sunset Sunday Series (that now has over 100 posts) on my blog. I first fell in love with the sunset not just simply because of its beauty, but also because it is daily, global and universally positive.  No matter whom you are with or where you are when the sun starts to set and the sky brightens everyone is at peace… I love its majesty and appreciate its magic.

Is being in your comfort zone important to you?
It’s good to know your comfort zone so you can take a step out of it and truly feel alive, that is staying adventurous. I tend to think becoming a travel blogger, photographer full time and attempting to make that a career is the biggest step outside my comfort zone I’ve taken. The trips and travel  – I am quite comfortable on the road.

What’s your most memorable travel experience or favorite trip ever?
So tough. The trip to Greece was the tipping point for me to become Mr. Stay Adventurous, also there is boarding the plane to go to Costa Rica, the first stop on my travel sabbatical, where I felt a new freedom. I can also say going to Shanghai as a financial services expert is high on the list or living and working in Mexico City as that trip adventure certainly changed my life too. Then there are special trips with loved ones… Oh there is too many to choose one. But if I had to tell the trip I am most excited about, it is always my next adventure.

What’s your favorite place on earth?
Manhattan. Isn’t it everyone’s? I really do enjoy New York City. It has an energy and for me it’s home.

Where are you off to next?
Viva Mexico! I am off to see the Mexican Grand Canyon – Copper Canyon. I am pretty excited to see more of the natural wonders that exist inside Mexico. Even though I’ve traveled the country pretty extensively, there is always more to see. The country is so diverse and is definitely one of my favorite places to visit. (Editor’s note: Craig is traveling in Copper Canyon as we post this.)

What’s the biggest fantasy on your bucket list and why?

My top destination is currently Mongolia. I want to gallop across the plains like Genghis Khandid on horseback. But I tend to think I’ll knock that one off…more of a fantasy might be to attend a US Presidential Inauguration Ball and meet the President. Well, maybe this election is my chance.

Is there anything we haven’t asked that you feel you’d like to share about your travels or your blog?
Well, I’d like to share I selected one photo from each continent I visited. I still need to visit Australia, but I will someday soon. I guess, I just wanted to have a little fun with the photos too… It’s all part enjoying life and well, staying adventurous too.

Thanks again for the opportunity to be showcased. I hope your readers come on over and check out the site. Everyone can use a few reminders to stay adventurous in life.

I haven’t met Craig either, except online and totally agree. We came close at TBEX 2012 in Colorado, but missed each other. One day.
